CD established the Noxious Weed Control Demonstration Project with several plots and different noxious weed species - Millers Lane.

Miller's Lane (Lander County Road 117)

The purpose of this demonstration was to test the effectiveness of various chemical mixes for the control of Scotch Thistle and Hoary Cress on county road shoulders and barrow ditches.

1. Treatment.
In May, 1999 two treatments were applied to the south side of the road: a tank mix of Milestone and Roundup, and a tank mix of Sahara and Diuron (Refer to Memorandum dated 2/22/02 in Attachment II for details). The following year the north side of the road was treated with different herbicides in two separate tests: a tank mix of Karmex and Oust and Arsenal alone were applied. The details of the applications in 2000 are reported in the memorandum of 4/18/00, part of Attachment II.

2. Results.
The results of all these applications are generally favorable. By June, 1999 the area treated with Milestone and Roundup showed effective control of the plants growing when it was applied. Many vigorous seedlings had sprouted since treatment, however. All the sprayed areas were bladed including the year of the initial application (1999). This activity masked much of the effects and has made meaningful comparison impossible. It is instructive, however, to note that as late as February, 2001 some control was still evident on some of the area.

3. Conclusion.
Diuron, Milestone, Sahara, and Arsenal herbicides are all more or less effective in the control of Whitetop, Scotch Thistle, and annual weeds with residual effect of more than one year. Roundup, as we know, is highly effective in the control of growing plants, but has no effect on germination of seeds.
