1. Treatment. |
At
this location a mix of Tordon 22K and 2,4-D Amine was tested for the control
of Scotch Thistle. Relative proportions were 5 parts Tordon to 4 parts 2,4-D
with a surfactant added. Application was in the spring after seed stalks
were formed. One retreatment was done in June, 2001, utilizing the same
spray mix.
|
2. Results. |
| Both
treatments killed the target plants growing at the time. The year between
the treatments (2000) was too dry to support seed germination. The number
of thistle plants in 2001 was substantially less than in 1999 when the location
was sprayed initially. |
3. Conclusion. |
| This
mixture is highly effective against Scotch Thistles. Application should
be while the plants are actively growing and prior to seed formation. Follow-up
treatments are needed for several years for complete control because viable
seed will be dormant in the soil for a number of years and will sprout when
conditions are right. |
