LCCD established the Noxious Weed Control Demonstration Project with several plots and different noxious weed species - Cawrse Road.

| This demonstration was to determine whether application of herbicides could supplement roadside blading for the control of annual weeds such as Kochia and Tumble Mustard, and control the spread of Hoary Cress (Whitetop). | |||

1. Treatment. |
A tank mix of 2,4-D, Roundup, and Diuron was applied in May, 1999. No other applications were made. It should be noted that Diuron acts as a soil sterilent at high rates of application. It must be water activated to become effective. At the rate applied in this test (10 lbs./Ac.) it should offer at least one season of residual effect.
2. Results. |
| There was immediate and dramatic evidence of kill on the plants growing at the time of application. Annuals reinvaded the site later that summer. There was apparently not enough precipitation immediately after a application to activate the Diuron. There was no evidence of residual control until the next spring. On May 11, 2002 there was still evidence of the Diuron, although the road shoulders and ditches had been bladed each spring since the treatment. | |||
3. Conclusion. |
| |
2,4-D and Roundup provide excellent control of growing weeds. Diuron provided good residual control but requires over winter moisture or at least one half inch of precipitation or irrigation for activation. This combination can be used to control weeds in lieu of blading if it receives sufficient moisture right after application to activate the Diuron.
