Humboldt Watershed Cooperative Weed Management Area

  The Humboldt Watershed Cooperative Weed Management Area (HWCWMA) is organized and ready to do business. This group started two years ago. The Board of Directors were elected at a public meeting in 2002 for this weed management coalition for the Humboldt River watershed.

   Pesticide applicators interested in updating their training and knowledge are invited to attend the 2004 Pesticide Applicator Certification Schools and Licensee Workshops. The annual educational program, is sponsored by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) and the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDOA).

Highlights of The Evolution & Progress
of LCCD Weed Control Program - 1996 to 2003

1996
  • Board's decision to focus on Noxious Weed Control.
    -- Decided against proposing a weed control district
    -- Identified the cost of herbicides as the item most limiting landowners from taking action against the invasion of noxious weeds.
1997
  • Initiated herbicide sales program to reduce the cost of herbicide to producers.
    -- In effect for 4 seasons (1997 - 2000)
    -- 1998 - Contracted for $38,300 in herbicides to resell to producers at our cost.
  • Cooperative Agreement for Noxious Weed Management in Lander County involving NDOT, Lander County, Nevada Department of Agriculture, BLM ( Battle Mountain and Elko Districts), US Forest Service, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, and Lander County Conservation District.
    -- Recognition of the existence and threat of noxious weeds in Lander County
    -- Agreement to work together and share information

  • Action Plan for Management of Noxious Weeds in Lander County - (NDOT, Lander County, Nevada Department of Agriculture, BLM ( Battle Mountain and Elko Districts), US Forest Service, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, and Lander County Conservation District.)

    -- Purpose: To call the attention of land owners and the public in general to the fact of noxious weeds and that they can be controlled or eliminated with appropriate chemical treatment.
    -- Nine different sites with six perennial species of noxious weeds, plus several annual species
    -- Up to two years of follow-up treatment
    -- Various contributions from: BLM, NDOT, N-6 Grazing Board,
    Lander County
  • Noxious Weed Identification & Control Methods handbook
    -- Cooperative effort involving Lander County Conservation District, Nevada Department of Agriculture, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and BLM.

  • Meeting with John Marvel, local landowners, BLM and Nevada Department of Agriculture
    -- Emphasize serious nature of the spread of noxious weeds down the Humboldt River
