Yellow Starthistle/Control Measures- LCCD has compiled a Chemical Handbook to assist producers with noxious weed treatments
Control Measures for Yellow Starthistle
Alias: Centaurea solstitialis

Mechanical Control:
  • Small infestations may be controlled by hand pulling.  Remove as much of the root as possible.
  • Repeated tillage that severs the roots below the surface is effective.

Cultural Control:
  • After mechanical or chemical control, establish desirable vegetation to occupy the vacant space and to compete with Yellow Starthistle seedlings.

Chemical Control:

  • Tordon
Rate:          0.25-lbs active ingredient per acre.
Time:         Apply in Spring in rosette through bud stage.
Remarks:   Treatment at suggested rate will not damage perennial grasses.  Use of surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution:     Tordon is a restricted use pesticide and must be applied by or supervised by a certified applicator.  Follow label                   recommendations and precautions.  Do not contaminate water.
  • Tordon & 2, 4-D

Rate:          1 pint Tordon plus one quart 2, 4-D per acre.
  • Time:          Apply during true flowering and repeat annually.
Remarks:    Use of a surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution:      Apply to non-cropland only.  Tordon is a restricted use pesticide.  Must be applied by or supervised by a certified                    applicator.  Follow label recommendations and precautions. Do not contaminate water.
