Spotted Knapweed

Spotted Knapweed
Alias: Centaurea maculosa

Distinguishing features:
(information taken from "Weeds of the West," Revised, 1992)

  • One or more stems, branched 1 to 3 feet tall, and grow up to 4 feet tall by the second year of life.
  • Leaves are deeply lobed and can be as long as 6 inches and one inch wide.
  • Flower heads are solitary at the end of each branch with bracts stiff and tipped with a dark comblike fringe.
  • Flowers bloom pinkish-purple (sometimes cream colored, but rare).
  • Seeds are 1/8 inch long, tipped with a tuft of bristles.
