Alias: Onopordum acanthium

Distinguishing features:
(information taken from "Weeds of the West," Revised, 1992)

  • Plant can grow up to 12 feet tall.
  • Leaves are large, spiny and covered with fine hair which gives it a grayish-green color. Basal leaves can be up to two feet long and 1 foot wide.
  • Flower heads are 1 to 2 inches in diameter and numerous with bracts spine-tipped. Flowers are violet to reddish in color.
  • Seeds are about 3/16 inch long, tipped with slender bristles.
