Salt Cedar/Control Measures- LCCD has compiled a Chemical Handbook to assist producers with noxious weed treatments.

Control Measures for Salt Cedar
Alias:  Tamerix ramosissima

Mechanical Control:

  • A bulldozer or prescribed fire can be used to open up large stands of Saltcedar. Resprouts can then be
    sprayed.

Cultural Control:
  • After Salt Cedars are killed, establishing a canopy cover with seeded grasses and planted cottonweed cuttings could reduce the chances of Salt Cedar re-invading the area.
Chemical Control:
  • Arsenal & Roundup (For large areas)
  •     Rate:          Water solution of 1/2% Arsenal and 1/2% of Roundup applied at a rate of 50 gallons per acres.
Time:          July through September. Stop spraying in fall when leaves are turning yellow.
Remarks:    Use of 1/4% Surfactant will increase effectiveness. Retreatment may be needed.
Caution:      Follow label recommendations and precautions. Do not contaminate water.

  • Garlon 3A (Stump treatment for small area
    • -Cut stump close to the ground (Fall is the best time).
-Immediately apply undiluted Garlon 3A to the perimeters of cut stumps.
-Re-treat any resprouts 4-12 months following initial treatment. Use the Arsenal and Roundup mix.

Caution:      Follow label recommendations and precautions.  Do not contaminate water.
