Control Measures for Musk Thistle
Alias:  Carduus nutans
Mechanical Control:
  • Small infestations may be controlled by cutting the root below the soil surface.  This will kill the plan
Cultural Control:
  • Re-establish desirable vegetation to provide competition.
Chemical Control:
Tordon
Rate:           0.25 lb. acid equivalent per acre.
Time:          Apply rosettes in spring or fal.l
Remarks:    Follow-up treatment will be necessary to control new seedlings.  Use of Surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution:      Restricted use pesticide.  Must be applied by or supervised by a Certified Applicator. Follow label recommendations and                    precautions.  Do not contaminate water.
 
2, 4-D
Rate:           1.5 to 2 lbs. acid equivalent per acre.
Time:          Apply to rosettes in spring or fall.
Remarks:    Annual treatments are needed to control seedlings.
Caution:      Avoid drift to sensitive plants.  Follow label recommendations and precautions.  Do not contaminate water.

 
Rates for 3-4 Gallon Back Pack Sprayer/Tordon or 2, 4-D:
  • Add 6-8 ounces of herbicide to 3-4 gallons of water in the sprayer.  *Add a couple ounces of Surfactant and stir.
  • *NOTE:  Be sure always to follow label rates as percent of active ingredients may vary.
