Musk Thistle

Musk Thistle
Alias: Carduss nutans

Distinguishing features:
(information taken from "Weeds of the West," Revised, 1992)

  • Plant can grow up to six feet tall.
  • Leaves are dark green with light green midrib, deeply lobed, and spiny margined. Leaves have a winged appearance.
  • Flower heads are solitary and usually bent over. Flowers are deep rose, violet or purple (sometimes white), 1 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter. They are subtended by broad, spine-tipped bracts.
  • Seeds are 3/16 inch long, shiny, yellow-brown with white hair-like fibers.
