Leafy Spurge/Control Measures- LCCD has compiled a Chemical Handbook to assist producers with noxious weed treatments.

Control Measures for Leafy Spurge
Alias:  Euphorbia esula

Mechanical Control:
  • Intensive and repeated cultivation throughout the growing season has proven somewhat effective.
Cultural Control:
  • Grazing by sheep and goats can be a useful tool in helping to control the spread of Leafy Spurge.
Chemical Control:

Tordon
Rate: 1-lbs. active ingredient per acre.
Time: Apply any time during growing season.  Retreatment will be needed for several years to control seedlings.
Remarks: Use of a surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution: Restricted use pesticide.  Must be applied by or supervised by a certified applicator. Follow label recommendations and precautions.  Do not contaminate water.

Telar
Rate: 1.5 ounces active ingredient per acre.
Time: Apply to young, activ
ely growing weeds.
Remarks: Use of a surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution: Apply only to non-crop sites.  Follow label recommendations and precautions.  Do not contaminate water.

Rates for 3-4 Gallon Back Pack Sprayer/Tordan:
  • Add 6-8 ounces* of herbicide to 3-4 gallons of water in the sprayer.  Add a couple ounces* of Surfactant, and stir.  NOTE:  Be sure always to follow label rates as percent of active ingredients may vary.
Rates for 3-4 Gallon Back Pack Sprayer/Telar:
  • Add ½ ounce of Telar to ½ gallon of water and an ounce or two of Surfactant (addition of 1 teaspoon of household ammonia will provide complete mixing (solubilization) of Telar). Stir mixture.  Add 8 ounces of this mixture to backpack sprayer and fill with water.  (Rate is approximately 1 ounce per acre when spraying roughly 2,000 square feet.)  NOTE:  Mixture is effective for 70 hours.  Do not mix more than you can use in 70 hours

*NOTE:    8 oz. = ½ pint or 1 cup
               1 oz. = 2 tablespoons or 1/8 cup

Cooperatively prepared by the Lander County Conservation District and the Nevada Department of Agriculture.
