Hoary Cress/Control Measures- LCCD has compiled a Chemical Handbook to assist producers with noxious weed treatments.

Control Measures for Hoary Cress
Alias:  Cardaria draba
Mechanical Control:
  • Small infestations can be controlled by digging and complete plant removal within a few days after plant emergence – for two to four years.
Cultural Control:
  • Planting competitive legumes such as Alfalfa can reduce Hoary Cress.
  • Moderate Grazing by sheep will provide some control by lowering weed densities and preventing flowering.
Chemical Control:
Escort
Rate:        1 ounce per acre
Time:        Apply at pre-bloom in early spring and to regrowth in fall.
Remarks:  Use of Surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution:    Apply to non crop sites.  Follow label recommendations and precautions.  Do not contaminate water.
Telar
Rate:          1 ounce per acre
Time:          Apply to pre-bloom stage in spring or to rosettes in the fall.
Remarks:    Use of Surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution:      Apply only to non-crop sites.  Follow label recommendations and precautions.  Do notcontaminate water.

Rates for 3-4 Gallon Back Pack Sprayer/Escort or Telar:
  • Add ½ ounce of Escort or Telar to 64 ounces of water plus an ounce or two of Surfactant, plus 1 teaspoon household ammonia (the ammonia will provide complete mixing (solubilization) of Escort or Telar).  Stir mixture, add 8 ounces of this mixture and 3-4 gallons of water in the sprayer.  (Rate is approximately 1 ounce per acre when spraying roughly 2,000 square feet.)  Note:  Mixture is effective for 70 hours.  Do not mix more than you can use in 70 hours

*NOTE:    8 oz. = ½ pint or 1 cup
               1 oz. = 2 tablespoons or 1/8 cup
