Control Measures for Canada Thistle
Alias: Cirsium arvense

Mechanical Control:
  • Cultivation can be effective if repeated regularly. Also repeated mowing is an effective control practice in alfalfa and other forage crops.
Cultural Control:
  • Intensive grazing by sheep or goats may reduce the spread of Canada Thistle.
Chemical Control:
2, 4-D
Rate:
 2-lbs. active ingredient per acre.
Time:
Apply before Canada Thistle reaches the bud stage. Effective control will require multiple applications.
Remarks:
Use of a surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution:
Follow label recommendations and precautions. Do not contaminate water.
Telar
Rate:       1.5 ounces active ingredient per acre.
Time:       Apply in the bud-bloom state or to fall rosettes.
Remarks: Use of a surfactant will increase effectiveness.
Caution:   For non-cropland use only. Follow label recommendations and precautions. Do not contaminate water.

Rates for 3-4 Gallon Back Pack Sprayer/2, 4-D:
  • Add 6-8 ounces* of herbicide to 3-4 gallons of water in the sprayer. Add a couple ounces* of Surfactant, and stir. NOTE: Be sure always to follow label rates as percent of active ingredients may vary.
Rates for 3-4 Gallon Back Pack Sprayer/Telar:
  • Add ½ ounce of Telar to ½ gallon of water and an ounce or two of Surfactant (addition of 1 teaspoon of household ammonia will provide complete mixing  (solubilization) of Telar). Stir mixture. Add 8 ounces of this mixture to backpack sprayer and fill with water. (Rate is approximately 1 ounce per acre when spraying roughly 2,000 square feet.) NOTE: Mixture is effective for 70 hours. Do not mix more than you can use in 70 hour

*NOTE:    8 oz. = ½ pint or 1 cup
               1 oz. = 2 tablespoons or 1/8 cup
